Programme Content
The CSBM consists of the following six core modules:
Introduction to Small Business Management
This module delivers a basic understanding of small business management. The module focuses on the business planning process with students completing the first stages of their business plan. This includes the Strategic Profile, the Internal Analysis, the External Analysis (including a competition analysis) and the Development and Evaluation of Alternative Strategies. Students also gain an understanding of the New Zealand business environment and receive advice on current resources available to them.
Introduction to Business Law
This module provides a background to basic legal terms and concepts, law making, compliance obligations under relevant Acts of Parliament, legal contracts and intellectual property. Students will decide what structure to operate their business under, and then develop a legal plan for their business.
Introduction to Marketing

Throughout the module, students conduct market research specific to their business. Results of the research are then analysed and incorporated into a detailed marketing plan designed to achieve the goals of the business.
Introduction to People Management
This module deals with key topics surrounding employment and staff development. This includes job analysis, recruitment, selection and payroll, as well as induction, training and performance appraisal. A central focus of the module is the legislative requirements of staffing. On completion of this module, students will complete a Human Resources and Operations Plan for their own business.
Introduction to Small Business Accounting
This module provides a background to business mathematics and accounting concepts. Throughout the Module students learn the basics of the accounting process, including cashbooks, bank reconciliations, GST returns, ledgers and journals, fixed assets, and financial reports.
Introduction to Financial Management
