First Steps to Business (FSB) Book course

Programme Overview

The First Steps to Business (FSB) course is a practical Level 2 Certificate business programme designed to give participants the tools to reach their business potential.

Whether they are new to the business world, want to build their business skills or are simply looking for a place to start, then the FSB is the opportunity they have been looking for!

This course is offered by Te Wananga o Aotearoa (TWOA).

FSB Overview

The FSB is a qualification that will provide participants with:

  • Key foundation business and life skills that are needed in the workplace and in self-employment
  • Their own personal budget
  • Business and work opportunities
  • An experienced mentor to guide them through the Programme
  • Comprehensive programme resources
  • Flexibility – the FSB is part-time and is provided at no cost!

FSB Programme Content 

Module 1: Taking the First Steps
This module introduces participants to the business environment. Participants will gain skills in time management, goal setting, communication and basic business literacy to assist in study, business and the workplace.

Module 2: The Planning Toolkit
This module focuses directly on understanding the business planning cycle. Participants will trial some of the techniques and planning tools used in the initial stages of a business plan. These tools include the formation of a vision statement, business goals and a STEPP analysis.

Module 3: Crunching the numbers
Financial concepts such as budgeting, taxes and simple business calculations will be examined and applied. A basic business budget from a given set of assumptions (instructions) will be prepared.

Module 4: Marketing Matters
This fourth module focuses on marketing, particularly advertising. It looks at what works, what doesn't, and how to effectively advertise a business on a budget. 

Entry and Selection Criteria

Applicants must:

  • Be 16 years or older at the start of the programme;
  • Be New Zealand citizens or permanent residents;
  • Attend an information session;
  • Be committed to the hours required by the programme.

This programme is not available for international students.

Tuition and Resource Costs

There are NO tuition fees for FSB. A full set of comprehensive business resources including detailed lesson plans, modules, workbooks, a text book and dictionary as well as DVDs will be provided.

This course is offered by Te Wananga o Aotearoa (TWOA).

FSB Delivery

Length: 24 weeks

Format: Part-time and class-based. Each Module will be delivered by a Tutor, one 3 hour session per week and two one day workshops per module.

Location: Queenstown and Alexandra*

Start dates: TBC
